Hi , My Fiancee fell over a week ago and put a large lump on the top left hand side of her forehead ,which then manifested itself into a black eye which she still has . She says she has a headache still and had bouts of blurred vision which has now gone and the area is still very tender..
Kind Regards

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that your fiancee is conscious, oriented and her headache and blurred vision are decreasing. But still you have to first rule out dangerous head injury by observing signs of it in her, like

: vomiting
: loss of consciousness for more than 5 minutes or decreasing consciousness
: fits
: bleed through nose/throat/ear without direct damage
: onset of new focal deficit
: persistent headache not responding to medications

If there is any of above sign, you should take her to ER as soon as possible. The doctor will evaluate her and may ask for CT head to rule out fracture or brain bleed. Further management will be decided after CT report. In case of fracture only, medical management is given usually while bleed may require surgery.

If no above signs, then no need to worry. This black eye is due to collection of blood in skin layers and spread of it around eyes through skin layers. This colour change occurs due to breakdown of blood products. It will fade away in 10-14 days on its own. At swelling or lump, you can
Apply icepacks.
Keep her head at higher level than chest to relieve swelling.
You can give her painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription. Avoid pressure at injury site.

Hope it will help her. Still no relief, you should consult doctor.

Thanks. Take care.

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that 7 days have passed after head injury and she is progressively recovering. The blurred vision had already subsided. The tenderness, lump and discolouration over injury site usually subside in 10-14 days.

Whenever injury occurs, our body's defence mechanism causes inflammatory reaction at that point to digest damaged dead tissue and heal it. This leads to redness, swelling, pain and warm skin. In case of your fiancee, the reaction has almost healed the area and resolving. This tenderness will gradually subside. But to give her relief, you can follow few tips

: Keep her head at higher level than chest
: Avoid pressure at injury site
: You can give her tablet Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription. It will stop inflammation.
: Do not apply icepacks now as there is no role.
: The black eye will become almost normal in 14 days.

Hope it will help her. If still in doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
