I have been taking medicines for my anxiety for past 2 years as prescribed by my psychiatrist doctor. Now I stopped the medicines just a month before as doctor adviced period and I started getting too many thoughts running around in my mind and now Im almost back to my past symptoms of anxiety, getting angry too often. Fears (in dark places) are sticking me again. What should I do again?

Hello,

You had been on anti anxiety medicines prescribed by your treating doctor. As per advice of the treating doctor you stopped taking the medicines and are getting the past symptoms. You should always taper the medicine you have been taking. Gradually tapering the dose will help to cope with the withdrawal symptoms. If required you should get connected with a detox center so that the withdrawal symptoms can be managed in time and you can remain comfortable.

Presently, get connected to a health care provider, so that the symptoms of withdrawal are managed and you suffer less. Also get connected to a physical therapist. Physical therapist will help you to identify the factors that trigger anger so that you can change your thinking process. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), will help you develop coping skills so that you can stay calmer and more controlled.

Other therapies like psychodynamic therapy, family therapy, etc., are helpful in anger management by teaching relaxation techniques and help to improve communication skills. Don't worry, talk therapy will help you come out of fear in dark places. Presently, do not think much just relax and read a good book, listen to some good music, cook or eat some of your favorite dishes. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
