Suggest Treatment For Acid Reflux

I had the stomach flu last week but never threw up. Yesterday I ate a little to much and now I have this knot in my stomach with acid reflex that I can t seem to get rid of. Over the last 18 hours I ve tried Tums and Pepto Bismo but neither has worked. Sometimes I fell like I want to throw up but I just burp up stomach acid. How do I get rid of this knot?

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

For milder forms of acid reflux, antiacids are a good choice for symptomatic relief. But in your situation it seems that these medications are not so effective.

First of all I recommend the following non-pharmacological steps:
- Avoiding large meals
- If overweight, loosing weight
- Avoiding chocolate, citrus juice and alcohol
- Waiting 2-3 hours after a meal before lying down
- Elevating the head of the bad 7-8 inches
- Eat small and frequent meals
- Avoid bending positions
- Eat low acid foods like: melons, bananas, oatmeal, bread, rice, egg whites
- Foods to avoid: fats, oils, sweets, orange juice, wine, coffee, tea, spicy food, fried food

If the above steps don't alleviate your discomfort, I recommend taking H2 receptor antagonist like ranitidine or famotidine. Another group of medication are PPIs (omeprazole, lansoprazole). These medication should be used only when the condition is confirmed.

I think with the advises above you will be just fine, but if the condition persist or worsens I recommend to you to visit a gastroenterologist, in order to achieve the best diagnosis and treatment. You should do also an upper GI endoscopy and manometry (to demonstrate possible compications of reflux like esophagitis etc and to evaluate the anatomy for possible hiatal hernia etc). One not so rare cause of acid reflux is also a Helicobacter pylori infection, so you should also get tested for that.

I'm at your disposal if you have additional questions. I hope this answer helped you. Best regards
