My husband went to doctors today and has a possible abscess in his nose. He was given an antibiotic injection, oral antibiotics and and ointment to place in his nose three times a day. If the abscess ruptures is there dangers. Is it possible that the abscess could rupture on the outside of the nose?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

If your husband has been diagnosed to have an abscess in the nose and has been given antibiotics then the infection will get under control in 2 to 3 days. It is important to do a clinical examination and look for the exact plane of the abscess. If the inflammation is greater inside the nose then the infection is involving the mucosa in the nose and if the redness is on the skin over the nose then it is below the skin.

The size and appearance of the abscess is important when trying to know the progress of the condition. If there is a small opening or punctum over the abscess area then there is a chance that the pus is collecting out and it might rupture. In there is no thinned out skin or opening then probably the abscess will not rupture. Please tell your husband not to touch the abscess and scratch over the area as this can also cause rupture. Antibiotics should be continued for recommended period. Please do not worry.
