Suggest Treatment For ADHD With No Coordinated Daily Chores

My child has spitting spells lightly constantly, he has hesitating movements at times sort of a tic. He goes through these rituals of moving back and forth and opening doors way before he has to leave to go some where. he has a hard time getting in and out of the car but eventually does it. He has tested positive for mariijuana, but I have never seen these types of reactions on people that were stoned before. He is ADHD and has been on vivanse to help him in school. He is 17. He is very irritable in the morning hard to get up always running late. Poor grades mostly just because he doesn t hand in assignments. He actually might have even done the work just doesn t bother to hand it in. The condition seems to be getting progressively worse. The testing was done mainly to adjust his meds. He has alergies as well and the Allergist is where the test was taken and sent to the lab. Marijuana was the only street drug found on the test. But since that time about 2 months ago things are getting progressively worse.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I ask this first because it is so important.

-How much sleep does your son get each night?
Adolescents need 9 hours of sleep per night. Inadequate sleep is a cause of poor health, poor school performance (how are his grades?), and use of drugs such as marijuana.

- How was the diagnosis of ADHD made?
- Is he inattentive, impulsive, hyperactive?
- How does the Vyvanse help his behavior?
- Is he taking the correct dose? Does he take other medicines?

I'm going to suggest that you see to it that he makes an appointment with his school counselor who will help him to focus on worthy goals. Your long question indicates you keep a caring, close eye on your son. I hope he knows how lucky he is.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd
