Suggest Therapy For OCD

My Friend thinks he has OCD, for the past 4 months he has washed his hands over and over again for no apparently reason...sometimes as many as 15+ times a day. He has told me that they are sore most of the time and he has even done it so much that they have bled. i have seen the condition they have been in and im really worried for him, i dont want him to be in pain. also recentely he has got a lot more snappier and aggressive to peoople. he wont go see a doctor or anything about it...im really worried :S

Hello thanks for asking from HEALTH CARE MAGIC

OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. The complaints of repetitive hand washing again and again are probably due to compulsions, but detailed evaluation is needed for making a diagnosis. To label a compulsion one should have underlying anxiety and distress about contamination of hands. Obsessive compulsive disorder needs proper treatment because it have risk to progression to severe depression.

SSRIs are used in treatment. The drugs are given in high doses. Drugs like Fluoxetine, Paroxetine are commonly used. Tricyclic drugs like Clomipramine has also very good effectiveness.

Apart from medicines BEHAVIOUR THERAPY has excellent roles in OCD. Exposure and Response prevention is common modality of treatment.

Thanks, hope this helps you
