Hi I have swelling of the helix on both ears. the swelling lessens, although gets worse again. It does itch and is sore. Its been happening around a week and normal antihistamines are not affecting. I m not sure what could be wrong although I did have mu ears pinned back 18 years ago. Not sure if it could be linked. any help or advic welcome
You have swelling on the helix of the ears. It itches and sores. Do not touch or scratch your ears. Avoid entering into swimming pools or any kind of water bodies to prevent spread of infection. You are suffering from perichondritis of the cartilage and subcutaneous tissue of the ear lobe (auricle). You can apply ointment hydrocortisone on the area affected to reduce itching. Take Acetaminophen or Combiflam / Naproxen orally, one stat to reduce swelling, inflammation and discomfort.
You can take a course of Augmentin for faster relieve. However, you are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT to detect any abscess or hematoma. If abscess is detected, surgical drainage is recommended to prevent ear disfigurement. In case perichondritis with hematoma is diagnosed, you will need urgent medical care and support. You will be treated according with needle drainage. You will be further treated with antibiotics (streptomycin, triamcinolone and hyaluronidase).
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
