Suggest Remedy For Swelling On Hands And Feet And Weight Gain

I am a 52 year old women that had a hysterectomy in May of 2013. Ovaries were not taken out. I did very well after, kept my weight between 126 and 130. I m 5 3 . Since May, April of 2014 I started gaining weight and I did not change my eating habits and I had joined a gym and was exercising more than I had in years. I am now 152 pounds. My thyroid numbers are low. I have swelling in my hands and feet, I eat under 1200 calories a day and exercise 3 times a week, try to do 4 times a week. I have not lost a pound. I look like I did when I was pregnant with my daughter (23 years ago) when I gained 60 pounds! Both my mother and sister have been diagnosed pre-diabetic and my sister eats and exercises 100 times better than I do.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on your symptoms, you may have a condition called hypothyroidism, which occurs when your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone. This can lead to weight gain, swelling in the hands and feet, and difficulty losing weight even with diet and exercise. Low thyroid numbers also suggest the possibility of hypothyroidism. I recommend consulting with a healthcare provider to discuss this possibility and potentially undergo further testing or treatment.

In addition, other conditions can cause swelling and weight gain, such as heart or kidney problems, so it's important to rule out any other underlying medical issues. Your healthcare provider can help with this as well.

In terms of remedies, it's important to follow any treatment plan prescribed by your healthcare provider. This may include medication to regulate thyroid hormone levels, or other interventions depending on the underlying cause of your symptoms. Additionally, a healthy diet and regular exercise can help improve overall health and may assist with weight management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
