my husband is 63 years old. he has been taking opiates and other pain relievers (prescribed) for a serious back injury. he is now severly consipated due to inactivity, lessened food and water intake and an inability to sit/stand for any length of time. should he go to emergency? he has very small bowel movements but nothing worthwhile ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Constipation is a common problem seen in people in old age and moreover his lack of activity would definitely worsen it. Primarily a per rectal examination to check for manual evacuation of feces is a must. High fibre diet with a laxative syrup and Tab. Itopride would me the further line of treatment.
