Suggest Remedy For Puss Filled Sebaceous Cyst With Hairfollicle

General question regardin infected sebatious cyst/ingrown hair follicle ....I went to my local GP to get antibiotics for an infected sebatious cyst / ingrown hair follical,(the doc says it cud be either of). Anyways Ive got really bad Obsessive compulsive disorder and tend to be extremely anxious around hygiene - problem is i constantly worry that when my cyst/ingrown follicle excretes a tiny bit of discharge it cud be hazardous and spread. I spend everyday antibacterialising objects with wipes bcuz im afraid i will spread germs evrywhere..... I know it is highly irrational and i think what i actually fear is the lack of knowlegde of exactly what is inside infected sebatious cysts / infected hair follicles. Is the discharge harmless? , im to embarrassed to tell my actual GP my fear so have reverted to finding the answer online =]

Hello,

a pus collection can be infectious, so taking some measures is not irrational. Just don't wipe it all the time! A sebaceous cyst and an inflammed hair follicle need different treatment unless the lesions are tiny. A cyst will have to be excised. An inflammed hair follicle with minimal pus collection may get better even by itself or with proper antibiotics.

In any case, if an abscess has already formed then draining its contents is essential for the healing process. If it's a cyst removing its walls is also very important to avoid recurrence.

So in conclusion, you should keep this area clean and dry. Applying warm compresses may help with pus drainage (if any). Don't be so afraid of it though, just keep it clean.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
