Suggest Remedy For Mucus In Stool

I am a 24yr old female. I had my gallbladder out in December 2009. I have GERD and take prescription Zegerid daily. I am 5 4, 154lbs. In the last 6 months I have lost 51 pounds by adjusting my diet and exercising. Over the last week I have had sudden diarrhea within two hours of eating. I have had the diarrhea from last Friday night until this past Friday or Saturday. Then Sunday I did not have a bowel movement and today I had a bowel movement that was pretty solid. Starting last week with the diarrhea there is a HUGE amount of stringy mucus in the stool, around the stool, and I have passed the stringy mucus on it s own as well. I have had a head cold for about a week at this point as well. I put off the symptoms of the diarrhea to maybe it was associated with allergies and picking up this cold. It seems to be always after i eat and I can feel it coming on with awful pain in my abdomen. The pain continues while passing stool and having diarrhea and doesn t subside until about 25-30 mins after. I also get a very hot (temperature like) and almost get cold sweats. I do have hemorrhoids which were confirmed by a GI doctor. I had a colonoscopy done in December 2009 as well which found obvious hemorrhoids but otherwise was unremarkable . I have had mucus in my stool in the past on a regular basis that is visible but nothing to the amount that it is now. I considered calling my GI MD on Friday, but thought I d give it another few days.

Hello,

7 days of diarrhea and mucus in stool needs the following:

- Send the sample of stool for tests and if amebiasis and/or bacterial infection is found it is better to get a proper course of an antibiotic, metronidazole, probiotics and you will be fine.
- If there is no complete relief then you may need a colonoscopy and biopsy for confirming or ruling out any dreaded disease.
- Other supportive tests of blood, ultrasonography or CT scan of abdomen may be needed.

Gall bladder surgery and GERD is probably not associated with the present problem hence should be considered as separate entity and treated with a PPI like Omeprazole, Domperidone to regulate motility and control GERD, antacids whenever needed; soft bland diet less in fat. Watch for further development and get treated accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
