Hi,
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.
Ankle edema is a common problem ,especially in elderly patients,I have seen many such cases in my clinic. It can be due to many causes and a detailed evaluation is needed for definite diagnosis.
If I were your treating physician I would take detailed history especially about treatment history.Long term use of antihypertensives like "
amlodipine "cause
edema and it will resolve if you switch over to other drugs.
Ankle edema could be an early sign of
heart disease and
kidney disease so I would do some investigations like ECG,RFT(Renal Function Test),rarely an echo to rule out those serious disease.
Ankle edema also be caused by
varicose vein or DVT(
deep vein thrombosis) you need a venous Doppler to rule out this.
Most cases edema arise due lack of inactivity or prolonged standing. And nothing to worry inn these kind of harmless edema.
You can try simple measures like salt restriction, regular exercises, compression stockings and calf massages for relief.Rise your leg several times a day to improve circulation it might clear the edema.
If your edema persist for long I suggest you to consult a general physician and you might need many tests I mentioned to rule out some conditions.
Hope this information helps.
Regards.
