Suggest Remedy For Eating Disorder In Public And Depression

Hi, For many years, I have struggled to eat meals in public places. I can feel extremely hungry one minute and the next feel very over-faced. My chest starts to tighten, my temperature increases and I start to feel incredibly sick. The situation has got worse over the last year to the point where I feel ill before I’ve sat down in front of food. This problem is really beginning to affect my social life as I feel embarrassed to go out with friends. I have also had a difficult year trying to come to terms with dramatic changes to my family life. This has led to frequent episodes of depression (feeling low and emotional, low self-esteem etc). I don’t know whether this has anything to do with not being able to eat in public but I would like to sort both issues out in order to get my life on the right track! what can I do? Thanks

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

I understand that you are going through a difficult time due to your problem. After going through the detailed description of your problem, I am of the opinion that you are suffering from a Social Anxiety Disorder.

The typical symptoms are:
- fear of being scrutinized or judged negatively by other people
- fear of embarassment or humiliation in public
- hesitation for social interaction and avoidance of such social situations
- physical symptoms such as shaking of the hands, increased heart beat, increased sweating, nausea, etc.

I think that it is this social anxiety and loss of confidence which is causing you to feel depressed. Since you seem to be suffering significantly from these symptoms, you definitely need professional help. Now, there are effective treatment methods available, in the form of medication as well as psychotherapy (counselling). With appropriate therapy and good motivation from your side, I'm sure that you will be able to overcome your problems soon. So, please consult a psychiatrist for further treatment.

Wish you all the best.
