Suggest Remedies For Vomiting While Treating Upper Respiratory Infection

My dr. put me on 100 mg doxycycline 2 x daily for an upper respiratory infection. If I take it on an empty stomach, I throw up. However, if I eat prior to taking, it reduces the effectiveness of the drug. Is there some other antibiotic I could take that would be equally as effective against a bacterial infection? Thank you! General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi dear Susan,

I am sorry for the situation you are going through.

You report to have an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) that is currently treated with Doxycycline as prescribed by your doctor.

Doxycycline is a good choice to treat URTI, however, not all patients can tolerate it as in your case having to throw up if taken in an empty stomach.

I highly recommend to stop taking Doxycyclin and report this intolerance to your doctor. In this way, he/she will change medication to another that you can easily tolerate (e.g. Bactrim or Azythromycin).

Hope this helps.
