Suggest Remedies For Swollen Soft Tissue Below The Front Teeth After Root Canal

Thanks Dr. Rynne! It s early Sun.eve. in NC and my pharmacy is closed. After a root canal last Wed., I ve developed swollen soft tissue (lips and chin) but not the gum below the front tooth, which was the key to call the Dr. Now everything s closed, and I ve got pain and teeth throbbing which may keep me up tonight. I m writing because I ve got leftover Oxcycodone from shoulder surgery which is still good. I ve also been taking diflusinal (a low side effect NSAID) for arthritis pain, and am wondering if it may work since I m coming up on the dose. No response yet on the emergency line. It s complicated. What do you think? Thank you, I would really appreciate your help! Paul H. YYYY@YYYY

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of swollen soft tissue below front teeth after root canal which seems to be due to mild injury to nerve and it mainly occurs when the nerve which have to be anesthetized lies very close to tooth being treated. It could be due to left over infection as well.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to

- Maintain complete oral hygiene and do warm saline gargles several times a day .

- Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and swelling.

Visit dentist once if symptoms keeps on occurring. It will normally takes 6 months to 1 year for symptoms to subside.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,

Hello,

I can understand your concern. It seems that either you have developed an allergic reaction to the root canal medication or it is a reaction of the body to the root canal filling material which is seen in some patients after completion of the root canal. It is also possible that some of the filling material of the root canal (Gutta Percha) has been overfilled and is irritating the soft tissues causing the reaction.

The confirmed diagnosis depend on the clinical examination and x-ray of the teeth. However, for the relief of pain, you can take Oxycodone that you have for the shoulder pain. I doubt if NSAID will help in this kind of pain as it may require higher painkiller.

As soon as the dentist's clinic opens, you should make an follow up appointment and go for the x-ray of the area that can decide further management of the problem.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
