Suggest Remedies For Swelling And Pain In Ankle Post An Injury

Hi I recently ( few days ago) hit my ankle really hard right on the bone. I cant remember exactly what I hit but I do remember hitting it. The past 3 days it has been swollen and the area is pink about the size of a tennis ball area and the bone is PAINFUL and hurts to walk and the swollen area feels hot. I m scared it may be Celulitis but no fever and Ive outlined the area with a inkpen today so far no growth outside that. What should I look for?Tthank you

Hi,

Swollen ankles and swollen feet are common and usually not cause for concern, particularly if you have been standing or walking a lot.

But feet and ankles that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could signal a serious health problem.

An injury to the foot or ankle can lead to swelling. The most common is a sprained ankle, which occurs when an injury or misstep causes the ligaments that hold the ankle in place to be stretched beyond their normal range.

To reduce the swelling from a foot or ankle injury, rest to avoid walking on the injured ankle or foot, use ice packs, wrap the foot or ankle with a compression bandage, and elevate the foot on a stool or pillow.

If swelling and pain is severe or doesn't improve with home treatment, see your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
