Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother has had diarrhea for eight days. He has taken medication to stop it. He had a colonoscopy before it began. The only other symptom he had was the first day it started he had a mild fever and chills. He has tried the bland diet for this and also introduced soft foods today and it still persists. He has been to urgent care twice.
If there is associated fever and chills then it likely due to infection of the gastrointestinal tract. Viral or bacterial infections are more common.
It is generally recommended that no solid food, even if bland, be used until there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms, the intestines cannot absorb the food and it delays healing.
When this 4 hour period occurs, then he can restart the bland food.
Till then he should use fluids to make sure he does not become dehydrated. Fluids and electrolytes are important to replace with oral rehydration drinks or sport drinks like gatorade.
Probiotics may also help as well. In addition, medications such as lomotil and peptobismol may also help slow down the diarrhea as well.
I hope this helps
