Suggest Medication To Control Severe Itching In Arms, Torso And Legs

Doctor, I have advanced stage kidney failure and I am scheduled for procedure on arm to select vein or artery for dialysis. This is to be done on May 6th 2015 and I am told it takes up to 8 weeks before dialysis can begin. In the meantime, I am experiencing severe itching over my arms, torso and legs. small pustules are forming as well. I am currently taking hydroyzine pam 50 mg several times daily. This is not controlling the itching. Do you have any suggestions on anything else for this problem?

Hi,

Definitely, itching may be one of the symptoms of advanced kidney failure. This is due to the fact that in kidney failure there is build up of toxins and waste products due to uremia & it may result in itching. Particularly, if you are having dry skin, it can cause more itching. If you scratch so often, then it can cause raw skin, bleeding skin or even sores(Pustules) in the skin.

If your symptoms are not relieved, by hydroxyzine, then some other anti-allergic, like Cetirizine, Loratadine etc. may be tried under guidance of your doctor. In very hard to treat cases, even steroid may also have to be used, if your doctor thinks it indicated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
