Suggest Medication For Chronic Depression In An Elderly Person

Hello and thank you for your time. My husband quit his job at boeing, came home early that night and went to bed. He didn t get up for 26 days. He is now in Kirkland at Faiarfax behavioral health. He has been laying in his bed 24 hours a day for 11 days. Is this normal behavior and treatment (or lack of it) for a very depressed 60 year old man?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Definitely the behaviour is not normal and it need to be treated aggressively. In case he has failed the initial medications I feel SNRI group of medication (Pristiq, Cymbalta) will make a better choice.

In case they have been already tried with little response or no response, using TCA followed by ECT is next course of action.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
