Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello , I think I have an abscessed tooth , the right side of my upper gums and my right cheek are a little swollen and a little painful ... I've rinsed with salt and warm water a few times , I just put some orajel on it ... I'm wondering should I put a hot or cold compress on the area ? Should I be drinking hot or cold fluids ? Do you have any other suggestions for treating this at home? Also it is New Year's Eve after all , is it ok for me to have a glass or two of wine during the festivities ?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Swelling and pain of gums and cheek can be due to abscess. Hot compresses will help to relieve the pain. Certain investigations are required like X-ray of the head and neck region. In addition, MRI of the head and neck region will also help to find nature of lesion in the cheek and gum region. In case this is due to abscess, the extent of the abscess can be determined by MRI. In case the lesion turns out to be due to abscess, antibiotics will have to be added. Hot compresses will help to relieve the pin but antibiotics will be required to reduce the pain.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
