I am experiencing depression that has been ongoing for 6 months after dx of glaucoma and separation from husband. What anti-depressant is most effective to help short-term? I am 68, no other health problems or medications. Exercise regularly. No allergies to medications.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

No doubt, there are a lot of antidepressants and they work pretty effectively. However, this is never and should never be an over-the-counter medicine.

So, I would advise you to meet a psychiatrist who would assess you and would better understand your problem and suggest you the most suitable drugs.

One thing to mention is that most of the anti-depressants doesn't work quickly that is they start working after a week.

Seeing a psychiatrist is important not only for prescribing you medicine but also for assessing you if there is some secondary cause of your depression. Sometimes non-pharmacological therapies are also used.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Depression can affect anyone and you can overcome it completely. This is a phase that comes and goes.

Symptoms of depression include feeling low all the time, loss of interest in previous pleasurable activity, feeling lonely, low in energy, hopelessness, helplessness, worthless feeling and sometime even suicidal ideas. Few of them or all can be present at a time.

There are many antidepressants available and all are equally effective. Medicines are prescribed as per the profile of patients.

Visit a psychiatric clinic and go for a detailed clinical assessment. Make sure you are not alone, try to be with someone close to you, share your thoughts, sleep for adequate time, have healthy meals on time, get involved in activities you used to enjoy earlier.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Rohit Kothari
