Welcome to HealthcareMagic,

I am sorry to say that there is no evidence based diet for Marfan's syndrome, a type of connective tissue disorder related to Ehler-Danlos Syndrome. Speculation exists around getting adequate B6, folic acid and B12, but adequate research on a diet or supplementation is not known at this time. Research around copper levels is also being looked at.

Dietary treatment is focused on controlling symptoms rather than on any knowledge of how to increase quality of life or to help your disorder in any way.

I have been pouring through the research literature for the past several minutes and see nothing conclusive regarding dietary plans.

You ask about milk. I don't see any reason not to drink milk. If you get gassy after milk you may limit how much dairy you consume at one time or treat yourself with Lactaid which will break down milk sugar lactose which frequently causes gas. Some people are "scared" of additives put in milk or of growth hormone. I know nothing of any harm from drinking milk.

Strive to eat a healthy, well balanced diet limited in sodium (2300 mg) adequate in fiber to avoid constipation and keep up on the research as it comes out. Follow healthy guidelines - do not reuse fat or use "rancid" oils. Eat wholesome, clean, well scrubbed food.

Make lifestyle changes to protect your heart, your eyes, your bowels. For example, choose safe exercises (low impact), wear glasses not contacts -

I wish I could be more specific, but I do not want to provide misinformation, false hopes or home remedies.

Most patients are concerned about their vitamin D status (have yours checked), adequate magnesium (also a blood test) and as I mentioned earlier, the B vitamins. Coenzyme Q10 is also being investigated. Vitamin D and coenzyme Q10, if needed, will have to be supplemented as getting them from the diet is difficult.

Be careful of patient forums. They are full of misinformation gathered from who knows where. The best place to search for current research is google scholar, Medline, PubMed - reputable search resources.

There are many lifestyle changes suggested if you have any questions about those, please write back.

Best Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
