Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
It started out as a cold about 3wks ago and now has turned into a cough(which seems to be a tickle in my throat). Mainly at nite it is very bothersome. I have taken 2 or 3 different medicines but doesnt seem to help. Are there any good cough suppressants that can be used?
There are different possible causes for persistent coughing including the following : (1)post viral cough- with a history of a recent infection ,this is the most likely cause
The cough can last up to 6 weeks after the other cold symptoms have resolved. Most cough suppressants would contain either codeine or dextromethorphan in similar concentrations. You can try combining different cough syrups (once they do not have similar ingredients) to see if this helps
(2)post nasal drip
(3)asthma
(4)GERD
I hope this helps
