Suggest Birth Control Options With Minimal Side Effects

Hi my daughter is 18 and in a relationship. We have an appt to see a gynocologist at the end of may to discuss birth control options. When she was 15 she was on the depo birth control shot which messed up her system badly. If there was a side effect to get she got it. we took her off after the 3 shots all the time she did not have her menstrual cycle. It took another 15 months before she got it again and another 6 months before it returned relatively regular. I am still concerned about the pills as she is not great at remembering to take medication and because of the side effects. what would be the next reasonable option/s for birth control with fewer side effects?

Hi,

There are several birth control options available with minimal side effects. Some options that your daughter may want to consider include:
* Intrauterine Devices (IUDs): These are small, T-shaped devices that are inserted into the uterus and can prevent pregnancy for several years. There are hormonal and non-hormonal options available. Hormonal IUDs release progestin, which thickens cervical mucus and makes it difficult for sperm to reach the egg. Non-hormonal IUDs use copper to prevent fertilization.
* Implant: This is a small, matchstick-sized rod that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm and can prevent pregnancy for up to three years. It releases progestin to prevent ovulation.
* Patch: This is a small patch that is worn on the skin and releases hormones to prevent pregnancy. It is changed once a week for three weeks and then removed for a week to allow for menstruation.
* Vaginal Ring: This is a small, flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina and releases hormones to prevent pregnancy. It is changed once a month.
* Condoms: These are non-hormonal options that can also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Your daughter needs to discuss her options with her gynecologist and choose a method that works best for her. It's also important for her to understand the benefits and risks of each method and how to use them correctly to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
