Suggest Better Medications For High Blood Pressure

Was doing fine with no prescription meds until last year when I began irregularly spiking a high blood pressure. Have been on amlodipine 5mg since December 14 and have recently developed an consistent irregular heart beat (frequent triple beats - have longtime history of infrequent triple beats.) EKG last Friday OK . Instead of switching me to another medication, MD prescribed Coreg which seems to be contraindicated for me; I m not in heart failure nor is my ejection rate 4O or less; recent stress test ejection rate was 66% - down from 90% 3 years ago. I had a silent heart attack in fall of 08, stent January 09. Have left bundle block, allergies to ibuprofen (angioedema), sulfa, injectable iodides and other substances. History of CFIDS, Polymyalgia Rheumatica, food intolerances. Also history of NAFLD, cysts on both kidneys, kidney stone right kidney. Are there any blood pressure medications that would be better suited than Coreg? (B.D. 7/26/32, Ht 5 2 , Wt 148).

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your doctor, most likely has prescribed this drug to you, because:
* It may control your high BP
* Being a beta blocker, it may control your frequent triple beats.
* Use of this drug is generally advisable, after an episode of heart attack. As you already had an episode of silent heart attack in 08, it might have affected the blood supply to the affected area, may be to a minor extent.
* Its use has been shown to improve the pumping action of heart. It is not necessary that you should have a clear visible symptoms of heart failure for its use.

Hence, in my opinion, the use of this drug is to be seen with reference to benefits vs risks in your case under guidance of your physician.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
