Suggest An Alternative Of Lisinopril For The Treatment Of Hypertension

I am currently taking 1 pill of losartan 25 mg. daily. I was given this prescription after taking lisinipril 10 mg. When I experienced coughing and wheezing after taking lisinopril for about three years, my odctor put me on losartan, Now, I am experiencing cough which produces phlegm, mainly in the early morning and late evenings, but not much during the rest of the day. This has been going on for about six months. Is the losartan s side efects causing this reaction. What might be a replacement prescription for my high blood pressure. I am a 72 year old male in excellent physical condition. I run three miles daily, watch my diet, and take good care of myself. Thanks for your advice, Harvey Buchalter. YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor while Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker. Both can cause cough as a side effect in some individuals. You can take a calcium channel blocker like Tab Amlodipine which also is a very good antihypertensive. Other groups of antihypertensive are Beta blockers like Atenolol, diuretics etc.

You can discuss this with your physician who can prescribe the appropriate antihypertensive for you depending on your health condition.

I hope that answers your question. If you have any further questions please feel free to write. Thank you for choosing healthcare magic!
