Suggest An Alternative Medication For Prilosec Taken For Dry Cough

I get a dry cough and cough to the point of gagging. My doctor gave me prescription prilosec and it worked but I m not able to sleep so we stopped it. I took the med over the counter, worked for a while but now it s back. Does coughing normally associate with heartburn? I never feel the heartburn .

Hi & Welcome.

You seem to be suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.

It occurs when stomach acid or stomach content flows back into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash (reflux) irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD.

Its most common symptoms include heartburn sometimes spreading to your throat, along with a sour taste in your mouth, chest pain, difficulty in swallowing, dry cough and hoarseness of voice.

Dry coughing may be associated with heartburn.

Proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec (Omeprazole) which suppress the stomach acid production is the standard treatment which also helps to to promote healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid).

You can take tablet Domperidone along with Prilosec to prevent the reflux and thus coughing.

You also need to have certain lifestyle changes which may help reduce the frequency of heartburn and dry cough like:
1. Maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight or obese, work to slowly lose weight.
2. Avoid tight-fitting clothing.
3. Avoid spicy and hot foods and drinks like alcohol, coffee that trigger heartburn.
4. Eat smaller meals, avoid overeating by eating smaller meals.
5. Don't lie down after a meal. Wait at least 3 hours after eating before lying down or going to bed.
6. Elevate the head of your bed. Place wood or cement blocks under the feet of your bed so that the head end is raised by 6 to 9 inches.

Hope the suggestions given above would be useful.

A feedback is appreciated.
