Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Eliquis

Taking blood thinner for 1 year (AFib) One episode. Eliquis, 5mg 2x daily. Concerned about side effects and now the cost. Almost hit donut hole. Is there one most effective w/ least concern re side effects? I think Comadin is the most economical, but do not like idea of the ingredients (rat poison) Generally, I am very sensitive to meds. Thank you, Dr. Lynne. Margaret Davis

Hello,

The cost issue it is unclear what side effects you are referring to. In general Apixaban (Eliquis) is very well tolerated.

Regarding alternative among the new anticoagulant drugs, which have the best safety profile and potential for interaction with other drugs there would be Dabigatran (Pradaxa), Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and Edoxaban (Savaysa).

However, their cost is similar to Eliquis, a similar rate of side effects as well.

There would be the other group including Coumadin and Acenocoumarol.

They have been used for decades so shouldn't be worried about ingredients.

However, there is a need for regular monitoring through blood tests and the fact they interact with many other drugs and foods. Risk of hemorrhagic complications is higher as well.

I am afraid these are the only available alternatives for your indication (atrial fibrillation). I hope to have made your options understandable.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
