Suggest Alternate Over The Counter Medication For Perindopril

I have been taking perindopril for several years. This month my HMO failed to refill my prescription on time ( We are backlogged for that medication they said).I have not taken the drug for four days, and since tomorow is a Sunday, the earliest I can expect the refll to arrive by mail is Monday (six days). Are there any immediate effects of missing this drug for that amount of time? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.

Perindopril is an ACE inhibitor which is used for treating hypertension. Leaving a hypertensive medication for more than 2 days may cause the blood pressure to shoot up with disastrous effects like stroke.

Hence, I would advise you to ask your physician for a different medication form the same class of drugs like Lisinopril or Enalapril or from a different class like Calcium channel blockers like Amlodipine if it agrees to the other conditions you may have apart from hypertension like Diabetes, heart failure.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
