Suggest A Diet For Stiffness And Pain In Fingers

Hi Dr. Siegl, I am a 54 year old who is experiencing stiffness in my fingers...I take D3, liquid Magnesium, Fish Oil, and Iron a 2-3 times per week...My exercise has been limited due to school however I am a server so I m on my feet on average...27 hours per week without rest. My water intake is not great...probably 8-16oz per day and my food intake includes more of the unprocessed foods...so fresh foods are what my diet consists of. My pain comes and goes...stiffness between the shoulder blades and lower back...I have fibroid tumors but have been able to shrink them with a high alkaline diet and virtually no white foods...I take anti-inflammatories when the pain reaches a 7 or higher...any suggestions on what I might be deficient in in terms of nutrients?

Hello! My name is Kathy Shattler and I am aRegistered Dietitian with advanced training.

The first thing I noticed was the Iron intake.Did you realize iron if taken when not needed creates excess free radical generation which will increase inflammation. Unless you have a documented iron deficiency take only until repleted.

Next, the gold standard to answer your question is to keep a three day accurate food intake diary and have it analyzed I use Nutribase Pro.

Then, if you want to dig deeper I would suggest Spectracell nutrient test. I order these in my practice as it gives me a better insight into absorption variables.

Cramps are experience with low calcium intake just as it does with magnesiumAt your age you need less iron and more calcium.

Your shoulder and back pains could be inflammatory. Topical anti-inflammatory cream may help or look towards your bowels as constipation may cause these pains.

Hope this helps. Kathryn Shattler, MS, RDN
