Small Painful Bump At Neck Back, Getting Bigger, Putting Neosporin On It

I started out with a small painful bump at the back of my neck, which just felt like a pimple/small boil (this was a week and a half ago) i tried to pop it thinking if I got fluid out of it, it would go away. It got bigger after that and scabbed over on top. I am getting worried bnecause I have been putting Neosporin on it for several days and it doesn t seem to be getting any better-it is red the whole way around the sore. I would have thought the Neosporin would take the redness away. It does hurt-especially if I bend my neck back as it is right where the neck bends. I ve never had anything like this before on my neck and am 47 years old-any ideas??

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic,
It could be a furuncle ( boil) and the bacteria causing it could be resistant to neosporin. As it is large and painful I recommend you to take a course of oral antibiotics. Another topical antibiotic like mupirocin ointment three times a day also will help. Get these prescribed by your doctor.
Warm compresses will help to reduce pain and swelling. It will also help in drainage of pus.
Hope this helped
Take care
