Should The Cuff Pumped Up To 200 While Checking BP For A Person With Hypertension?

My husband has hypertension and is on medication for it, today he went to the Dr.s and his b/p was down to 120 which was low for him especially since he was just at a Dr appt two days ago and it was @ 180, I asked the dr why she only pumped the cuff to 180 she responded and said because his blood pressure has been ranging 120 the last couple of visits she immediately got defensive and said I she didn t appreciate me questioning her medical opinion, my question is isn t the cuff usually pumped up to 200 especially when the person has hypertension no matter if there reading where normal on previous visits because it should be monitored especially when there on medication? Or was I wrong for being my husbands voice?

Thanks for query.blood pressure monitoring is done in two steps normally.in first step we check for occlusion of radial pulsations which indicates the upper limit of patients BP.now we use steth to see upper and lower limits again .here we have a idea what is systolic bp of patient (as seen in first step)so just pumping above that level is sufficient.it is not necessary to always inflate to 200.cuff is inflated only to occlude the arteries to know the pressure.I hope u got the answer.
