Should Grapefruit Be Avoided While On PMS-Hydrochlorothiazide?

Hi, I have been taking Pms-Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg 1/2 pill once per day for a few years. Usually the pharmacist puts a label do not eat or drink grapefruit, but recently he didn t put that label on but now has put a label stating to avoid excessive sun exposure or artificial sun light. Should I still avoid grapefruit?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern for the safety of PMS-Hydrocholorthiazide while taking grapefruit.

Thiazide diuretics like PMS hydrochlorothiazide and have shown no interaction with grapefruit juice, there is no need to avoid taking grapefruit while taking PMS hydrochlorthiazide.

Since PMS hydrochlorthiazide is know to a cause a severe allergic reaction to the skin i.e., photosensitivity reaction, you must avoid exposure to sunlight and to use sunscreen or wear protective clothing to avoid photosensitivity reaction.

Hope to have answered your query.

A feed back is appreciated.
