Should A Low Pulse Rate And Low Diastolic Reading Cause Concern?

Hi, I am 40 years, male and have taken the first blood pressure reading in my life (!). It turned out to be 122/63 coupled with a pulse rate of 43. I am fit and healthy and do vigorous excercise (running/squash), 4 times a week. Six years ago when I was at my fittest my pulse rate was in the the low thirties. I understand that top athletes have low pulse rates, but I'm not an athlete - just a reasonably fit academic. Is there anything to worry wih the low pulse rate and the low diastolic reading?

Hello,

Blood pressure is not at all a matter of worry but pulse is definitely on lower side. You should monitor your pulse especially during rest time. It may be normal for you especially if you are not having any symptoms like dizziness or fainting, but symptoms are then you will certainly need evaluation. Also one thyroid test should be done just to rule out the other common cause of low pulse rate.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Sagar Makode
