Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic. I understand your concern.

The tests you are describing in addition to your daughter body weight, make me suspect for Type 2 diabetes. This condition is also called insulin resistant diabetes. More common in adults, type 2 diabetes increasingly affects children as childhood obesity increases.
The drug that your daughters treating doctor prescribed, Sugamet (Metformin), is the first-line drug of choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, in particular, in overweight and obese people.
With regarding to your concern,if the drug is started taking, it doesn't mean it will be used life long.
If I were your daughter's treating doctor, I would recommend starting the medication. Beside changes in lifestyle, which will help your daughter's blood sugar normalise, the drug will help getting normal values easier. Once the blood sugar is normalised, Sugamet dose could be reduced and even discontinued.
I would like to emphasise that Sugamet, as in your daughter's case, is used for lowering insulin and blood sugar levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This helps regulate menstrual cycles, start ovulation, and lower the risk of miscarriage in women with PCOS.
Beside taking the drug, as I mentioned above, your daughter may be able to improve the management of the condition by eating well, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight.

Hope I answered to your question. Don't hesitate to ask again.

Take Care,
Dr. Ina Zaimi
