I was rushed last weekend to maternity unit as I was bleeding so heavily and passing lots of clots and products. Had an internal exam which registrar stated, I had miscarried. I had a follow up appointment 2 days for IV ultrasound, which showed baby was still alive with strong heartbeat, but amniotic sac was shaped like an hourglass. Will this pregnancy be viable?
Hi, The future of this pregnancy can be observed through watchful expectancy. As the fetus is alive no active intervention should be done. Irregular shape of the gestation sac is unfavorable to the pregnancy, but in this situation can be expected to heal. Please take absolute bed rest with foot-end elevation, watch for further bleeding or pain, avoid sexual intercourse and all forms of stress and follow the pregnancy with serial sonograms and serum beta-hCG estimation. Hope this helps. Good luck.
