Numbness In Left Side Of Foot, Ringing In Ears. Had Invasive Lower Back Surgery, Left A Piece Of Bone Inside. How To Rectify This?

I had a invasivie lower back surgery a few backs and have just recently found out they left a piece of bone inside of me. I think the correct name is lamina. I since have tingling/numbness in my left side of foot below my toes and ringing in my left ear. Is there anything that can be done to correct my problem?

Thanks
Jesse

Dear Jesse,

The symptom of numbness as mentioned in your post can be attributed to nerve compression which might have occurred during the post surgery period period.
The roots of the nerve which supply the foot arise from lower back.
Any post operative compression in the area will cause such symptoms.

Though symptomatic relief may be obtained with nervigenic agents like Vit B6, Vit B12, Folic acid, etc. the underlying cause needs to be treated.

So, kindly consult a Neurologist & get a proper clinical examination done, including nerve conduction studies.

The ringing sensation in ear can be due to many reasons like infection, eustachian tube dysfunction, noise trauma, ototoxic drugs, systemic conditions like hypertension, anemia, etc.
Kindly visit an ENT specialist for proper evaluation & management.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Its very common to have TEMPORARY tingling & numbness in the legs after a spinal surgery since it involves handling the nerve roots during the surgical procedure.

Generally, this tingling & numbness should wane off within 6-8 weeks of surgery. Take some NEUROTROPIC VITAMINS like Vit B12 supplementation daily. This is said to resolve your symptoms.

This is to let you know that LAMINA is an inherent part of a vertebral body. Removal of this part is necessarily not needed in all the spinal surgical procedures. So don't worry about it.

I personally feel that ringing in ears is in no way related to your surgery.

If your symptoms are still persisting, Consult a spine surgeon and follow his advice accordingly.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
