Lump At Sternum, Borderline Diabetic. Pain In Lower Ribs And History Of Indigestion. Contact Doctor Soon?

(Edit) Thanks for the response doc, you were spot on with what my doctor said and did. Chest X-ray came back normal (No mass or visible sign of a break). So he was thinking it might be a hernia. He had me come in for a re-evaluation and during the poking and prodding he pressed on my stomach which caused a good amount of pain. He s thinking I may have had a very small hairline fracture of the xiphoid process which isn t showing on the X-ray and at the same time gastritis. The swelling of the xiphoid process was noticeably smaller on the last exam and couldn t feel anything that could be a hernia. He wants me get some blood work and a gastritis breath test then go from there. The pain has been decreasing this week which is week 3 and after taking some antacids is almost gone now. Wants me back in 10 days for a follow up. On another note after loosing the weight I am no longer pre-diabetic(End Edit)

A few weeks ago I felt a pop at the very bottom of my sternum while rough housing with the dog. I feel a lump there, but I m not sure if it is my xiphoid process and just never noticed it before. I did loose 15lbs on a diet though since the doctor said I was borderline diabetic back in may so maybe I can feel it now. 2 weeks later it is hurting and there is pain in my lower ribs and sometimes random spots on my chest and what feels like stomach and esophagus as well. I do have a long history of indigestion as well. Also I cough white phlegm first thing in the morning. My lungs feel fine, no problems breathing, but whe I get the pain in the random chest spots it feels like inflamed between the lung and ribs. It all feels better when standing, I go in for a physical on Tuesday and just wanted to know if I should try to go in to see the doc sooner?

Hello,

Surely you need to see your doctor. The pain has started only after a history of strain. So it is advisable to evaluated the cause of the pain.

I would advise my patient to take a chest x ray to rule out musculoskeletal condition. Prescribe analgesic for pain. Antacids for indigestion.

Gastroscopy is advised to rule out gastritis.

I find this answer helpful
