Long-term Adverse Side Effects Of Xanax?

My son is extremely anxious and can hardly make himself go to school. Most weeks he makes it two days a week. He is 18 years old and says Xanax is the only drug that has helped him, but because he abused it once and he has other addictive behaviors they have weaned him off of it. Are there long term adverse affects of Xanax?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello
Welcome to HCM

Xanex or alprozolam is a benzodiazepine drug and this drug has abuse potential. Usually it is not prescribed for longer periods of time for anxiety. It should be taken on SOS basis for symptomatic control of anxiety. He is having severe anxiety and he is not able to step out of home so best is to consult a Psychiatrist for expert opinion. Medicines like SSRIs, SNRIs etc are very useful in controlling the anxiety and are free of serious side effects. They also dont carry abuse potential.

Thanks
