Is Tonsillectomy A Safe Procedure?

My 16 y.o. grandson has sleep apnea and is scheduled to have his tonsils removed in 10 days. I am seriously concerned about bleeding after surgery as well as anesthesia during the procedure. What questions should we ask doctors in advance and what should we look for after surgery regarding bleeding? His father has been told to stay close to home for at least a week. What about nausea/vomiting, which could cause bleeding, pain relief (what treatment do you recommend), or any other things we should consider. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Tonsillectomy may significantly improve sleep apnea symptoms in patients. Nothing to worry. Bleeding may be a complication after surgery, but under skill full hands it can be managed. Please consult your treating doctor he will examine for other risk factors and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
