Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, My dad is suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy which is an after effect of 20 years old Diabetes type-2. His Creatinine level is 3.6 since a week. He is barely able to lift his hand when asked to do so. To diagnose Gullian Barre Syndrome, the doctors are recommending NCV test (Nerve Conduction Velocity). I want to ask, if there is any other alternative for NCV because I dont think he would be able to tolerate the pain during that test. If not, what could be the possible treatment if the test results are not favour. Is IVIg a good option?
Is the weakness is limited to hands only, or affected legs or other muscles also?
NCV is a test to assess the speed of conduction through a nerve- there is no alternative for this. This test is very useful for diagnosing GBS. Treatment depends on the cause- if it is GBS, IVIG is the treatment of choice, while if it is secondary to other causes like uncontrolled diabetes, treatment if directed toward the cause, and IVIG will not help. GBS usually causes weakness in legs first, followed by abdominal and chest muscles. Your doctor will discuss in more details.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
