Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Currently I m taking 8 mg of warfarin daily for 3 months because I had an unspecified blood clots in my knee and also in each lung. My doctor suggested me taking eliquis instead, 5mg every 12 hrs. I haven t changed as yet because I wanted to make sure I was theraputic by having my blood checked every month now. If I do change to eliquis do I have to be concerned about wondering if my blood is thin enough? And I am miCssing some of the vegetables which I feel are more healthy right now because of the warfarin.
Hi, Yes you can safely switch over from warfarin to Eliquis (apixaban). I would suggest you to do the switch over under the guidance of healthcare professional only. Eliquis is started only after certain INR levels (usually Eliquis administration does not need routine INR monitoring as required in warfarin administration. You need not worry much about level of blood thinning as long as you are taking the drug as prescribed. Unlike warfarin, Eliquis does not act through vitamin K antagonism. Therefore, you can resume those missing vegetables once you are stabilised on Eliquis. You can discuss the above information with your healthcare provider. I hope the above information helps you. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a wonderful day.
