Is Sudden Withdrawal From Eltroxin Safe?

I have been on Eltroxin for approximately 25 years .05mg, after taking the tablet in the morning I do not feel well, giddy and was wondering whether I still need the medication, I have the blood tests every six months and my GP just tells me to carry on as normal. Can I just stop with the tablet?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As long as you are using thyroid medication like Eltroxin, your thyroid levels will be normal. But when you stop taking thyroid supplementation, then thyroid deficiency state will come. So you have to continue the dose lifetime.

Sudden withdrawal of Eltroxin won't cause any harm.

Giddiness and not feeling well might not be related to your thyroid medication. Please check the thyroid levels once whether they are normal or elevated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Siddartha
