Is Stinging Pain In Stomach After Sleeping On Stomach A Cause For Concern?

Hi! Sometimes when I sleep on my stomach, or lay on my stomach over an extended period of time, it hurts when I wake up or after a while. Its been this way forever, so I dont expect it to be serious, but im just curious. The pain is sort of stingy I guess and I feel it most when I breathe/when the muscles are used, so I expect it to have something to do with that?

Hello,

You are sleeping on your stomach often. It causes you stinging pain. Ideally you should avoid sleeping on your stomach, it is not good. It strains your back, neck and spine. That can lead to poor sleep and discomfort throughout your day. Stress on the spine increases stress on other parts of the body and may cause pain, tingling and numbness, discomfort, etc. You may develop neck problems like a herniated disk in long run. Avoid sleeping on your stomach.

Stinging pain may be indicative of sprain or strain in the muscles, appendicitis, developing gall stone, IBS, ovarian cysts, UTI, peptic ulcer, etc. Stinging pain should disappear once you stop sleeping on stomach, if not get clinically examined by a GP. Get blood work out, tests and required investigations done. You will be treated accordingly. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
