I have constant pain on my right leg, but no pain on my right hip. What I would like to know is could the pain on my leg be caused by arthritis of the hip, although I have no pain at all on my hip.No one seem to know as the arthritis on my hip is moderate according to the X-rays. thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
It is unlikely for the arthritis in the hip to be directly causing leg pain, especially when your disease is moderate
However hip arthritis can change the way you walk and your posture. This can cause lumbar spondylosis or disc prolapse than can impinge on a nerve & cause pain in your leg.
Arthritis can also cause inflammation of nearby structures that can add to leg pain.

I would -
-examine you for clinical signs of neurological pain or arthritis related pain.
- do an x-ray of your lower spine, pelvis and both hips and legs
- check serum calcium, phosphate and vitamin D levels in addition to inflammatory markers and complete blood count.
Based on these, I would arrive at a diagnosis and a treatment plan.
If your leg is swollen, please avoid weight on it and keep it elevated above hip level when sitting or lying down.
Any worsening of pain, discoloration, numbness should be immediately reported.
Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
