Is Retest For STD After Getting Negative Result Necessary?

Hi doctor I had sex intercourse over two and a half months ago in Vietnam. The condom broke and was inside for a little while before noticing. Since then I have had HIV anti body test in Australia at 3 weeks, 7 weeks and most recently 10 weeks. All my results were negative to HIV, hep B and other STD s. With so much information on the internet, I guess my question is, with current testing capabilities in Australia should I be satisfied that my results are conclusive or should I get tested again in two weeks to make it I guess three months after a possible exposure? Thanks Adrian

thank you for query. It depends on what HIV testing did you undergo. As antibody appearance after HIV infection may take nearly 6 months in few patients. You can undergo Antibody testing again after 6 months from the date of exposure.Else you can go for HIV RNA PCR at this stage to allay the fears of HIV. You can get back to me for any clarifications with the photos.Dr Bharatesh D Basti Dermatologist and Venereologist
