Is Reddened Swelling Around A Cut On The Finger Suggestive Of Infection?

My boyfriend got a small cut on his finger at work a few days ago. It appears to have become infected. There is a red ring around the cut and his finger is pretty swollen and slightly red. The cut is small, but the colors inside seem to be dark brown. Do you think it is okay to wait until tomorrow morning to go to the doctor, or should he go to the hospital tonight?
