Is Rapid Weight Gain A Potential Side Effect Of IV Ferrlecit?

Is rapid weight gain (7.2 pounds in less than 5 days) a potential side effect of IV ferrlict? I have had regular infusions since February but my most recent one on Wednesday 6/17/2015 gave rise to new side effects: weight gain and pain in limbs. My level was under 4 in February and is now 21

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Weight gain is a general complain of patients under Ferrlecit therapy. If a patient has metabolic disease she may gain weight so the patients should be counselled to take a balanced, nutritious diet to prevent recurrent iron infusion therapy.

Iron infusion therapy may cause toxicity that may result in symptoms like cramps, abdominal pain, headache, GI upset or hypersensitivity reactions. You are suggested to start taking food rich in protein, calcium, iron and other minerals to maintain the proper iron balance of your body. However, stay connected with your treating doctor & keep him informed of your symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
