Is Propylthiouracil Safe To Take For A Life Time?

I have a friend who has been taking Propylthiouracil Tablets BP 50mg for over three years now. She is 42 years old and has no plan of getting pregnant- already mother of three. She is afraid that choosing to get surgery is risky. But she is also as much afraid that continued use of these tablets for life time (20 years or more) is dangerous. Can you advice on this please? thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Greetings

Propylthiouracil is fine to be taken once you ensure the below poins
1. Regular warm saline gargling of throat
2. Regular monitoring blood cells count

Considering current scenario when surgery is advised, it would be better to opt for surgical intervention rather than prolonged drug therapy which is not devoid of side effects. This is a simple procedure regularly handled by surgeons. Thyroidectomy is safe procedure. Advise your friend to rethink about it.

Do get back to me for further assistance.
