Is Presence Of Blood In Stool While On Xarelto A Concern?

my husband recently started xerelto for a blood clot about a month ago. He has a severe migraine, complaining he is cold and when he finally got sick to his stomach, there was a trace of blood in the contents. Being that he is on a blood thinner.... should I take him to the ER?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Xarelto is anticoagulant drug.

bleeding gums, black stools and bleeding from other sites are commonly associated side effects.

However if it is severe then the drug should be stopped.

In your case blood in stool is in trace amount but as he has stomach complain chances of gastric ulcer is there. In such case profuse bleeding from peptic ulcer can be serious complication.

I advice to consult surgeon to rule out peptic ulcer.

Regards
Dr. Hiren
